The What of Where and When

Carly Tyll is an emerging conceptual artist born on July 2nd, 1991. Based in Richmond Hill, Ontario, she earned a degree in Fine Arts at OCAD University, majoring in Photography. While this allowed her the opportunity to refine how she saw the world, it ultimately left her infatuated with the unseen. Venturing beyond the realm of realism, she began to deviate from traditional modes of photography, finding inspiration in surrealism and expressionism. Expanding upon her background in graphic design, branching into Photo-illustration, she had the opportunity to create rather than capture, exhibiting a unique inhibition to the mundane, which can also be seen in her explorations of drawing, painting, sculpture, collage and film, often demonstrating a mixed-media approach.

First exhibiting her work in the 2015 "Festival of the Body" exhibit at OCAD University, she also exhibited later that year at The Ontario Science Centre in Toronto, showing several pieces in their "Redefining Bodies: A Focus on Prosthesis." In 2020, she made her international debut, exhibiting at M.A.D.S' "#Mil@no Photo Award" exhibit in Milan. Since then, she has exhibited with a variety of other galleries and organizations around the world, including Lohme Art Gallery, Visionary Projects, Teravarna, Art Gallery 118, Camelback Gallery, Marvelous Art Gallery, Envision Art Show, Contemporary Art Gallery Online, Colors of Humanity Art Gallery, Grey Cube Gallery, Art Room Gallery, Fusion Art Gallery, Gallery Ring, Biafarin, and publications such as Marvelous Art Magazine and Artistonish Magazine.

Receiving recognition with the Adobe Design Achievement Awards in 2014 as a Semifinalist in their "Traditional Media - Photography" segment, she was also enlisted as a Semi-finalist in 2017, in their "Fine Art Motion Graphics and Animation" segment. In 2021, she placed "Best in Show" with Camelback Gallery, also receiving a "Silver Award" from them earlier that year. Additionally, she has also received a "4th Place Award" from Contemporary Art Gallery Online, several "Talent Prize Awards" from Teravarna, a "Crystal Award" from Gallery Ring, and several other "Merit Awards", "Finalist Awards", and "Honorable Mention Awards".

ARTIST STATEMENT

The How of Here and Now

Exploring concepts relating to Philosophy, Psychology, Physics, Mathematics, and Spirituality, the emphasis of my work is placed upon the human condition. Questioning and challenging laws of nature, I examine the entanglement of existence as both finite and infinite. In reverence to the beautiful and the sublime, I reflect upon the awe-inspiring wonders of reality within the physical and metaphysical realms, contrasting and comparing the two as both binary and singular. Contemplating consciousness as an axis to which all things exist, my work reveals a romanticized rendering of reality, characterized by the power of potentiality.

Synthesizing aestheticism and substance, the intention of my work is to inspire and illuminate. Being the product of a profound longing for purpose and liberation, my work exhibits a curious and honest examination of the human experience, filtered through a lens of conceptualism, and interpreted through my own whimsical and sensitive nature. Captivated by the conception of that which is beyond comprehension, my work often engages in an escapist fashion, revealing remnants of the unconscious. Permeating the borders of perception, I invite the viewer to question the way in which they see the world, often demonstrating dream-like depictions of the mundane. Enhanced through the use of staging and post-production, my work reveals an otherworldly escape into a realm of symbolism and sentiment, saturated in dignity, detail and desire.

Considering the process of my work to be autonomous to its intent, my work often evolves over the course of its gestation. In an effort to broaden my visual vocabulary, I allow the work to unfold naturally, rather than relying on a particular mode of representation. Developing my dexterity in response to an immense imagination and an indomitable dedication to its liveliness, much of my process is self-taught and therefore open to experimentation. Poised in a position of polarity, I believe the role of the creator can only be defined in relation to its creation. I create because it's fundamental to my very existence, feeding an insatiable hunger of the soul.
